Located in West Los Angeles, Pasadena and Newport Beach, the Enterprise Exotic Car Collection is an extension of the car rental giant’s entertainment division, which provides luxury car rental services to film studios, productions and other local clientele.

St. Louis-based Enterprise Rent-A-Car is North America’s largest car rental company, with more than $9.5 billion in revenue in 2007.

MICHELIN EXEC LEAVES TO START HIS OWN COMPANY.

A top researcher for Michelin North America Inc. has left the tire maker after 25 years to launch his own high-tech start-up in Greenville.

As director of external research for the Greenville-based tire maker, Ralph Hulseman managed its research relationships with universities, national laboratories and other companies. He was always on the lookout for innovations to improve tire making.

Now he hopes to build a new company around a technology he found while prospecting for Michelin. It's a manufacturing process developed by William P. King, a professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Illinois.

The process allows the molding of microstructures and nanostructures on curved surfaces. Hulseman said it has the potential to change the look, feel and performance of a wide variety of everyday products. For example, he said, vinyl flooring could be made to feel like carpet.

"It can be applied to anything that's made in molds," he said.

Hulseman's partners in the start-up, called Hoowaki LLC, are King and Greenville businessman John Warner, founder of the annual InnoVenture venture capital conference, where Hulseman represented Michelin for several years.

Warner said he sees a lot of opportunity in the technology "and quite frankly I have a lot of confidence in Ralph."

Hulseman, who has bachelor's and master's degrees in chemical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, said Michelin supports his foray into entrepreneurship after a quarter century of corporate life.

"Michelin realized that one way to develop the technology was to have a third party commercialize it, and so eventually I asked if I could leave the company and try to do that," Hulseman said. "Everyone hopes that Michelin may be a customer some day -- as well as a lot of other companies."

BF GOODRICH TO LAYOFF AS MANY AS 500

As many as 500 BFGoodrich employees in Allen County could be temporarily laid off next month.

A sign was posted Friday at the Woodburn, Ind., tire plant saying that "as many as 40 percent" of its employees would be laid off for two months, according to a report in the Fort Wayne News-Sentinel.

The plant wants to start making layoffs by week's end, but doubts management will be able to make them that soon.

Similar notices were placed at the Tuscaloosa and Opelika plants in Alabama.

Between 1,250 and 1,300 people work at the Woodburn plant, with an annual payroll of about $69 million. Those temporarily laid off will remain under supplemental employment and medical coverage for eight weeks, the News-Sentinel reported.

Toyota Motor Corp. says its global sales in the July-September quarter fell for the first time in seven years because of faltering demand in the United States.

Toyota said Monday it sold 2.24 million vehicles worldwide during the quarter, down 4% from the same period last year. It marked the first year-to-year decline in the July-September period since 2001, the company said.

Toyota had enjoyed strong U.S. sales earlier this year on robust demand for fuel-efficient vehicles, but September sales in the United States dropped 32% due to sluggish consumer spending.

Toyota has been vying with General Motors Corp. to be the world's biggest automaker by global sales. Last year, Toyota's group sales rose to 9.366 million vehicles, just shy of GM's 9.37 million.

It was a supercar club owned by the famous Harrods luxury store and were, for a ’small’ fee ranging from £16,000 ($32,800) to £20,000 ($41,000) a year you could drive cars like the Aston Martin DBS, Ferrari F599 GTB Fiorano, Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera, Mercedes McLaren SLR, Porsche Carrera GT or the Rolls Royce Phantom. The club was launched back in January, but it seems it didn’t had the success Harrods was hoping for, because they’ve announced the club will close soon. “Our target market is predominantly City bankers, and our sources of funding are also City based. Both of these areas have dried up completely in recent weeks due to the state of the economy,” a club’s spokesman said.

At the Sao Paolo Motor Show in Brazil, Renault has unveiled the Sand’up concept, based on its Renault/Dacia Sandero. The Sand’up, which is the first Renault concept designer entirely in South America, has a modular design that allows it to go from a closed hard-top coupe to a convertible pickup. The concept is powered by a 1.6 liter Hi-Flex engine that delivers 107 hp when running on petrol and 112 hp when using ethanol. We have to admit, Renault did a great job with this concept, which is pretty attractive with its big wheel arches, satin nickel roof rail arches and see-through doors.

Snap-on Inc. recorded net income of $54.6 million on net sales of $697.8 million for its third quarter ended Sept. 30, 2008. That compares to earnings of $41.1 million on sales of $680.7 million for the same period a year ago.

The comparative increases in net income (32.8%) and net sales (2.5%) were matched by the company's third-quarter operating income, which rose 19.3% to $86.4 million. Snap-on's income-to-sales ratio was 7.8%.

"We continue to focus on fortifying our already strong business models, pursuing geographic and customer diversification, and driving our value creating processes, including innovation and rapid continuous improvement," says CEO and President Nick Pinchuk.

The new 2009 Toyota Venza underwent a unique transformation by Street Image resulting in the creation of the SportLux Venza performance show car. The Venza SportLux will be displayed at the Toyota exhibit throughout the 2008 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show in Las Vegas from November 4-7.

The conceptual vision of the Toyota SportLux Venza by the Street Image design team was centered on a vehicle which could be offered as a factory tuned model. Taking cues from European tuners, Street Image added an assortment of subtle, yet aggressive, body kit modifications including a six-piece lip kit enhancement, rear hatch spoiler, custom grille and integrated hood scoop.

Its performance driven stance reflects the Toyota SportLux Venza's substantial boost in power output. Among its many performance modifications are several components from Toyota Racing Development (TRD) including a supercharger kit. The SportLux Venza's power surge is complemented with a height adjustable coil over tuned suspension and rides on Chrome Cognac No 20 Wheels measuring 24-inches and Toyo Proxy 4 performance tires. The massive wheels are controlled by 15-inch front and 13.6-inch rear TRD Big Brakes with forged calipers.

Ford Motor Co.'s largest private shareholder -- Las Vegas casino mogul Kirk Kerkorian -- is cashing in his chips.

He has begun selling off his shares in the struggling Dearborn automaker at a substantial loss, according to a statement released by his Tracinda Corp. this morning.

"In light of current economic and market conditions, (Tracinda) sees unique value in the gaming and hospitality and oil and gas industries and has, therefore, decided to reallocate its resources and to focus on those industries," Kerkorian's company said.

In it, Tracinda said that it sold 7.3 million shares of Ford stock on Monday for an average price of $2.43 per share. Tracinda said it intends to further reduce its stake in the carmaker, including the possible sale of all of its remaining 133.5 million shares "depending upon market conditions and available sales prices."

Banks and finance companies in the US are aggressively cutting back on making car loans, as growing numbers of borrowers fall behind on their payments and lenders' access to funding is squeezed in the credit crunch.

Lenders such as Wells Fargo, Capital One and GMAC this week all reported heavy cuts to their auto lending businesses amid signs that borrowers are increasingly affected by the slowing US economy and rising unemployment.

Wells cut its $25bn auto loan portfolio by almost 25 per cent in the third quarter as it pulled back from making riskier loans, while Capital One cut back its volume of car loans by more than half.

GMAC, the GM lending unit now 51 per cent owned by Cerberus, the private equity group, tightened rules to issue loans only to high-quality borrowers. Dealers estimate 60 per cent of the customers who buy GM cars will not qualify for loans under the new rules.

A recent study by CNW Research shows that the number of approved auto loan applications in the US has declined since last year. Prime approvals fell 10.2 per cent, while for subprime borrowers the approval rate is down by 66.1 per cent.

Consumers are thinking twice before buying a new car as fears of a global recession rise. This is hurting sales and threatening to further weaken the automotive industry, the European Automobile Manufacturers Association warned on Wednesday.

New vehicle registrations fell 8.2% year-on-year in September despite two extra working days, as the fallout from the financial crisis hit auto manufacturers hard, reported the European Automobile Manufacturers Association, which represents the 15 major European vehicle manufacturers.

On Tuesday, Daimler said it will drop its Sterling truck brand in March 2009 and close two Sterling plants to address depressed demand across the industry. The company also said it was cutting around 3,500 jobs in the U.S. and Canada to cope with the slump in the economy.

Elements of the agreement include Honda sponsorship of NHL television and Internet coverage along with active participation at NHL events in both the United States and Canada, such as NHL Face-Off Rocks 2008, NHL Winter Classic and NHL All-Star Weekend.

"With more than 53 million fans in the United States and Canada, the NHL is a big part of the sports landscape in North America," said Steve Center, vice president of advertising and public relations for American Honda. GM CLOSING WISCONSIN FACTORY

The U.S. automotive sales slump worked its way to Janesville, Wis., Monday when General Motors Corp. told workers that it would cease operations at a sport utility vehicle factory there in December.

The factory makes the GMC Yukon and the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban large SUVs, and sales of those vehicles have plummeted with an increase in gasoline prices to around $4 per gallon earlier this year.

Gas prices have subsided closer to $3 per gallon nationwide, but that has done little to boost sales.

"That segment is really shrinking, so we had to make the difficult decision to have this cessation," Lee said.

Industry analysts say closing factories or cutting shifts will help GM reduce costs and preserve cash at a critical time with the company losing billions and burning up cash at an alarming rate.

GM had $21 billion in cash and $5 billion available through credit lines at the end of June for total liquidity of $26 billion but has been burning up cash at a pace of more than $1 billion a month.

The company announced a plan in July that calls for cutting $10 billion in costs and raising another $5 billion through asset sales and borrowing through 2009.

DAIMLER TO ADD 1,000 JOBS.

While everyone seems to be laying people off, Automaker Daimler AG plans to add more than 1,000 jobs around the world next year despite the world financial crisis.

The company said it will create 500 new positions in Stuttgart, Germany, alone in an effort to prepare the next generation of employees.

At the same time, the company will be unable to cut any jobs at German facilities until at least 2012 because of an existing agreement with employees, company spokeswoman Marina Krets said in Stuttgart.

"There are no job cuts planned," she said.

The company said it is prepared to adjust to market demand through flexibility measures that protect its core business.

"Global competition tests our structures and efficiencies, which we try to improve constantly," Daimler (DAI) said.

Toyota Technical Center (TTC) celebrated the grand opening of its new engineering and safety testing facilities here today with Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm and U.S. Congressman John Dingell, as well as several hundred government officials, community leaders, suppliers and Toyota team members.

TTC, a division of Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing North America (TEMA), already has a site in Ann Arbor. With the expansion in York Township, TTC is adding 400 new jobs and will boost its employment to 1,100 by 2010. "Toyota's investment of $187 million to advance research and development demonstrates our commitment to the North American automotive industry," said Shigeki Terashi, TTC president. "TTC has been conducting R&D activity in Michigan for over 30 years and recognizes Southeast Michigan as the center for automotive R&D in North America."

September 2008 Lancer Evolution sales were up 154 percent over September 2007 sales.

In a badly depressed overall automotive sales market, Mitsubishi's total September 2008 sales were down 39 percent, compared to September 2007 (12,102 sales).

Honda is releasing the DN-01 to the U.S. motorcycle market. The new design features a 4-valve, 680cc liquid-cooled V-twin engine sending power through the HFT transmission, a continuously variable, hydromechanical automatic. It has 2 automatic modes, (D) drive and (S) sport plus a 6 speed push button manual mode. The HFT has a lock up mode for cruising to increase fuel economy. The DN-01 also has combined ABS, a front and rear linked system with ABS. It carries 4 gallons of fuel and weighs 595 pounds. It’s available in Candy Dark Red and Black. MSRP $14,599.

I have a hunch this one will go over pretty well, especially with those riders looking for an automatic but not a scooter, there’s been a lot of interest ever since it was first revealed and quite a few of you have written in wondering if it was coming to the U.S. It looks like the answer is yes. A study commissioned by a phallically named insurance company proves beyond all doubt that the unbridled roar of an Italian supercar turns women on but the soft purr of a fuel-efficient econobox doesn't stimulate anyone's MPG-spot.

David Moxon subjected 40 men and women to the sounds of a Maserati, Lamborghini and Ferrari, then measured the amount of testosterone in their saliva. He found everyone had higher levels of the stuff -- a measure of their arousal -- after hearing the revving exotics, but the amount the women had was off the charts.

The econobox, however, left everyone colder than a January day in Nome.

The study was commissioned by the ultra-exclusive British insurer Hiscox (we swear we're not making this up), which was curious to know how people respond to high-end luxury cars. "We knew owners of luxury cars felt a connection with the sound of their vehicles," says Steve Langan, managing director of the insurance company. "We have now scientifically proven the physical attraction people feel when it comes to cars."

To test the theory that high-performance cars get people hot, Moxon had 40 men and women listen to recordings of the three Italian exotics and a Volkswagen Polo. Everyone had significantly more testosterone after hearing the exotics, and all of the women were turned on by the Maserati. The guys, on the other hand, were drawn to the Lamborghini.

“We saw significant peaks in the amount of testosterone in the body, particularly in women," Maxon says, noting that even women who said they had no interest in cars were turned on. "Testosterone is indicative of positive arousal in the human body so we can confidently conclude from the results out today that the roar of a luxury car engine actually does cause a primeval physiological response.”

BILL HEARD CHEVEROLET - THE WORLD'S LARGEST CHEVY DEALERSHIP - CLOSES!

The company based out of Sugarland, TX claims in a statement that "rising fuel prices, a product portfolio of mostly heavy trucks and sport utility vehicles, economic recession, unfavorable local market conditions for vehicle sales, the crisis in the banking and financing sectors, and other factors all combined to create a business environment in which the company simply did not have the resources needed to continue to operate."

Needless to say there's always two sides to the story and the BBB recently worked in conjunction with Dateline NBC on an investigation of Bill Heard Chevrolet's advertising practices. It was alleged on film that this company did not have the cars in stock that they were advertising and that they immediately tried to sell a higher priced vehicle than the one advertised. Any time you make a purchase, it is best to comparison shop prior to making a purchase.

The Office of Consumer Affairs in Georgia issued 16 actions against Heard Enterprises in the past 15 years with total fines of approximately $280,000. There is at least one deceptive advertising case pending against Bill Heard, but the bankruptcy has thrown that into question.

Designed after the Audi R8, this catamaran was designed for a race boat establishment that is based out of Dubai - go figure. The 29-footer is called the R 8.8 BioCat and features gullwing doors and the body lines and characteristics of the R8. It's evident that the boat would sell now the only question is who'll fork over the money? We'll keep you posted.

Actor, racer, philanthropist and all-around great human being Paul Newman has died. Newman was 83 years old and is believed to have been diagnosed with cancer in 2007. His acting career spanned more than half a century and included roles such as "Fast" Eddie Felson, Cool Hand Luke, and Louisiana Gov Earl Long among many, many others. His Newman's Own food line has raised more than $200 million for charity. His partnership with Carl Haas owning race teams in Can-Am and Indy Cars lasted over 25 years and Newman himself won countless races in various national and international classes.

MASERATI GRANTURISMO MC CORSE CONCEPT

Maserati is planning to bring a hardcore, racing tuned version of its effortlessly beautiful GranTurismo coupe to the Paris Motor Show next week, called the MC Corse Concept.

Suitable for those Maser buyers who’re more interested in racing than posing in their Italian supercars, the Corse offers quite a few meaningful upgrades over the standard car. The most obvious difference from the outside is the new aero package that the car wears, including a prominent front splitter that is said to purposefully funnel air to the revised and enlarged rear spoiler, keeping the Corse firmly planted on the track. The racing concept has also been lightened – Maserati specifies that the MC Corse weights less than 1400 Kilograms or 3086 pounds – and draws more power from its 4.7-liter V-8, now rated at 450 horsepower and 376 pound-feet of torque.

MERCEDES GULLWING SPOTTED.

This is the Mercedes Gullwing, set to fly to the top of the tree when it hits showrooms in 2010 after a Geneva show debut the same year. The Gullwing is so heavily disgused that at first glance it looks like a Chrysler Crossfire on steroids and bondo.

Details on the Gullwing are sparse at present, though sources suggest the newcomer, codenamed C197 internally, will wear an AMG badge and have a unique moniker aimed to distinguish it as a standalone, flagship model.

California drivers chafing at the ban on holding cellphones can soon forget about texting, too: Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has banned motorists from sending, writing or reading messages on electronic devices starting Jan. 1.

Schwarzenegger signed legislation Wednesday that imposes a $20 fine for a first offense of texting while driving and a $50 fine for any subsequent violation.

CHRYSLER'S MAJOR LOSS.

Ford and GM claimed losses of over $20 billion in the second quarter of 2008, which is more than the GDP of some developing countries. Chrysler has seen larger sales decreases than its fellow Detroit automakers, but in terms of cash losses, team Pentastar is way ahead of the domestic pack. Chrysler CEO Bob Nardelli gave dealers the financial lowdown Tuesday, but declined to provide details to reporters. Even though Chrysler's losses of $400 million are far less daunting than its U.S. counterparts, the Auburn Hills, MI automaker is far from overjoyed. Nardelli told dealers that the losses came in spite of large-scale cost cutting, and he mentioned that 2008 sales were down 24% year over year.

The privately owned automaker still has $11 billion on hand, but Nardelli warned that if Congress doesn't approve a $25 billion loan, more job cuts and other cost cutting measures would be necessary. Chrysler also needs the federal loan to reach its goal of bringing just one of its three recently introduced EVs to market by the end of 2010.

The new Mercedes Benz SL is making a splash and as usual, the gents over at Lorinser have already taken a stab at the vehicle and created a body kit that'll have any SL owner wanting the first one. With the same aggressive lines that we'd typically expect from Lorinser, the kit is bold, daring and nothing far from what we'd already want. While the new Lorinser wheels may be a bit suspect and on the "Blingy" side, the kit is all good and the trademark "gills" something that we wouldnt be without. Power upgrades aren't ready yet but as soon as they are we'll let you know.

For some odd reason the big round badge in the center of the grill makes the front end of the Benz look really happy.

The Ferrambo was created by combining a custom-made body from 1960 Nash Rambler Wagon with a rear-mounted 3.6-liter V8 engine matted to a 6-speed manual gearbox that came out of a 2002 Ferrari 360 Modena Donor car. Tim Divers and Mike Warn also completely overhauled the Rambler’s interior giving it a Ferrari-look. Other modifications include the Ferrari Unequal Wishbone front and rear suspension, the one-off machined 18x8.5 front and 20x10 rear wheels and an ultra cool custom luggage style trunk under the hood.

When the doors open at the Paris Motor Show next month, Mercedes-Benz will be giving everyone a sneak peek of the new E-Class front-end styling. No, not in the form of the new E-Class itself, which will be unveiled at a later date, but in the ConceptFASCINATION, an attractive shooting brake concept based on the upcoming E-Class Coupe's architecture and featuring the new E's front-end styling.

Gone are the round headlamps we've become accustomed to. In their place are new "rhomboid" lamps that, on the show car at least, incorporate fiber-optic driving lights. The grille will likely be the same one seen on the new E Coupe, while we'd expect the sedan to have the traditional grille-and-hood-ornament combo instead. Power comes from Mercedes' new 2.2L, 204-horsepower BlueTEC (with AdBlue) 4-cylinder diesel, which will make its production debut this fall in the Euro-market C250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY Super Verbose Prime Edition sedan.

MotorTrend reports that GM insiders are saying that the next-generation Cadillac Escalade will jump from its current GMT900 truck platform to the Lambda crossover architecture that underpins the GMC Acadia, Saturn Outlook, Buick Enclave, and Chevy Traverse. MT points to the not-gonna-happen-but-it-almost-did Buick Enclave Super as evidence that an Escalambda would be able to handle an eight-cylinder engine, which would be a step up from the rest of El Generalissimo's increasingly-crowded crossover lineup. Edgier, CTS-like styling would likely be a given, too.

MICROBUS A POSSIBLITY? MAYBE SO....

GERMAN maker Volkswagen is making moves again to resurrect its iconic Microbus, say well-placed sources in Wolfsburg.

Trying to come up with ideas to boost sales in the big North American car market, the boss of VW asked staff to come up with some ideas for "lifestyle" vehicles. He was, apparently, inundated with suggestions to build a modern Kombi.

The Kombi became famous in the US in the free-loving 1960s and the van also found wide appeal in Europe and Australia.

This has improved the chances of the Kombi - or the Microbus (concept pictured), to give it the official name - making a comeback, because it could be sold worldwide, not just in the US, insiders say.

Volkswagen had planned to reintroduce a stylish recreation of the original Microbus in 2005 based on modifications to its T5 commercial vehicle. The new MPVT5 was to have been assembled exclusively at VW's Hanover commercial vehicle factory. However, spiralling costs and a weakening of the US currency eventually saw the project cancelled by the then Volkswagen boss Bernd Pischetsrieder.

But with new management in store for Wolfsburg (former Audi chief Martin Winterkorn is due to take over shortly), there appears to be renewed enthusiasm to see the Microbus reach production - although in a much more modified form than planned. One possibility is basing the car on the same front-drive platform as Volkswagen's new MSP (mid-sized sedan) project.

A cut-price, four-door sedan for the North American market, the MSP, is to be produced at VW's new $US1 billion ($1.2 billion) plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, from 2011.

A senior Volkswagen official revealed to Drive: "We're looking at ways to produce the Microbus that will make it competitive in North America. At the moment there is no firm decision but, with the exchange rate the way it is, there is no way we could entertain building it in Europe."

The folks over at Galpin Auto Sports are working on a top secret Mustang (at least it was till now) that sports a huge twin blower system and a gigantous set of 24-inch Forgiato Wheels out back and 22's in the front. Codenamed "Project B this car will have 16-inch Wilwood brakes to help stop the car while the getup comes from twin blowers. Here's a few snaps.
