CAN YOU GET 200+ MPG? VW CAN....

Five years ago (way before the whole "green" scene became big and gas prices went ballistic) Volkswagen showed off its 222 mpg "1-Liter Car" concept (shown. Apparently VW is back and looking at ways to introduce a similar vehicle and board chair Ferdinand Piëch says it can be done -- due to advances in materials and a reduction in associated costs.

According to Piëch, one supplier says the all the necessary components can be had for around $6,775 (and not $47,400 as had been calculated). Of course, the 1-Liter concept was powered by an 8.5-horsepower, 299 cc one-cylinder engine, and anything built for the public would have to have horsepower thus raising the probability the car might only be able to get 150 mpg or so.

Regardless, I'd still get one for the right price.
